Push push push, go go go. Physical activity sure does put a strain on our muscles. They get used up, depleted. And then, they hurt! As athletes, we want to recover as rapidly and efficiently as possible. That’s why I was so excited when BioSkin reached out to me and asked me if I was interested in becoming a brand ambassador. I know from personal experience that compression aids in recovery so I gladly said yes. They sent me some gear to try and here is my BioSkin review.
Anyone that has done strenuous physical activity has undoubtedly had a case of DOMS, delayed onset muscle soreness. Usually DOMS strikes when you wake up on the day following your physical exertion. DOMS… hurt! You feel so sore and stiff and simple daily function like raising your arms or sitting down become labored. This happens to everyone, from your standard gym goer to your CrossFitter to your marathon runner.
When we get sore, what do we do? We rub the area that’s sore. Sure, it may be uncomfortable, but gently squeezing the area helps bring relief and loosen up the tightness. I know it does for me. Wouldn’t it be great if there was something that could do that gentle squeezing for me? That’s where the compression gear and BioSkin come in.
BioSkin labels themselves as “Performance, Preventative, and Post-Injury Bracing”. The offer compression gear as well as various bracing devices for elbows, knees, wrists, and back. I like how BioSkin is on both sides of injury, both post-injury and the more important injury prevention.
Before they reached out to me for my BioSkin review, I was already a fan/believer in the recovery powers of compression. After I ran any distance in excess of a mile, my calves and/or shins would hurt. I found wearing calf sleeves after running, especially while I slept, significantly sped up my recovery and left me with less pain upon waking.
How does compression aid in recovery? The squeeze provided by compression helps push more oxygen and nutrient rich blood into your muscles, which helps fix all those tiny microscopic tears that working out made. In addition, all the junky lactic acid and other metabolic waste gets pushed out of your sore muscles. Now that’s what I call a win-win situation!
There is also performance benefits being touted by compression clothing advocates. Take a look at any basketball game and you’ll see athletes wearing everything from leg compression to arm compression by some of the games biggest stars like Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard. I myself will often wear compression shorts or leggings when I WOD, although sometimes it is just for warmth. There isn’t a ton of science to back up claims of compression helping performance, but even if it’s all a placebo effect… if it gives you a mental advantage, then it still helps performance!
My package from BioSkin came at exactly the right time. I had done the CrossFit benchmark workout Karen for the first time over the weekend. (Karen is 150 wall balls, 20 lb ball at a 10 ft target, for time.) My quad muscles were on fire immediately afterwards and that fire turned into a smoldering heap of pain the following day. I grunted and whimpered every time I moved! Thank goodness I received a BioSkin Thigh Skin Sleeve for my BioSkin review! My upper legs were in need of some TLC!
First thing I noticed, check out the thought that went into sending me my trial product! That’s a hand written card to me!
Nice touch BioSkin! Now that had my thigh skin ready to go, it was time to test it in action during the WOD. And boy, the delivery was timed perfect because I was about to do A LOT of weighted walking lunges.
When asked about becoming a brand ambassador and a BioSkin review, I had to order the correct size sleeve. The directions on the BioSkin website were clear and gave me an accurate fit. The sleeve felt tight! But it is compression and is supposed to fit tight. Duh.
I can’t imagine a more functional test for a thigh sleeve other than walking lunges. Maybe if I had thrown some squats in there too… but lunges were enough.
Like I said, a lot of lunges! All the way down and all the way back. Three times.
Anyways, let’s discuss the sleeve. It stayed in place for sure! I adjusted it only one time! Not bad at all considering all the movements, plus it had my kipping pull-ups to deal with as part of the WOD. Well done BioSkin! The material is light and breathable so my thigh didn’t feel like it was on fire. The product gets an A+ for performance!
Now, the big question… did I do any better with the leg I was wearing the sleeve on… did my right leg feel any stronger? In a word, no. I really couldn’t tell any difference. And honestly, I wasn’t expecting to. It was comforting knowing the squeeze was there though.
When the day was done, I went to bed with the sleeve on my left thigh. I wanted to see if there was an appreciable difference in how my legs felt in the morning. Lo and behold, there was! My left leg was noticeably less sore and more nimble! Hooray, success! Hey BioSkin, we have a winner!
So, what did I learn? I learned that BioSkin is a company that cares about people. They make high quality products that perform well under high stress. Wearing BioSkin compression gear may help you recover quicker and experience less discomfort (it did for me!). BioSkin also has a wide range of bracing gear for people that have had unfortunate injuries and are doing rehabilitation.
There you have it folks, my BioSkin review. I’m happy to be an ambassador for a company and product I believe in. If you have further questions, ask me and I’ll tell you all about BioSkin, or you can check them out here at their website.
